Area Information

Come to the Heart of the North Georgia Mountains - Blairsville (Union County) Georgia

From any direction, as you enter Union County, you are welcomed by picturesque beauty. As you look at our mountains, the tall one with the "lump" on top happens to be beautiful Brasstown Bald, the tallest mountain in Georgia (4,784') and the lump is the visitors' center and observatory, a must see if you love breathtaking beauty.

Wonderful hiking trails abound in the area, including the Appalachian Trail. And be sure to see Helton Creek Falls which is only a short hike into a delightful escape of stately trees, mountain laurel, rhododendrons, and of course, the falls. If you want to walk off one of our good country meals, you can pop over to Meeks Park and enjoy a nice walk along Butternut Creek.

If fishing is your pleasure, there are many, many great trout streams, or you can try Lake Nottely, a 4,180 acre stocked TVA lake.

The new Brasstown Valley Resort is just 10 minutes "up the road" from Blairsville in Young Harris, Georgia. Its elegant dining, 18 hole golf course, gift shop, hiking trails, and so much more make it well worthwhile to drop by and stay awhile.

Each August and October, the Georgia Mountain Fair is held in nearby Hiawassee. This is a "must see" event. Many Nashville musical talents are at the fair as are crafts from "gone-by days," rides for the kids, and god ole mountain hospitality.

During the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th weekends in October of each year, the Sorghum Festival is held in Blairsville featuring a parade, old car show, square dancing, clogging, pole climbing, horseshoe throwing, etc., and many other events worth watching, plus the "biskit" eating contest.

Blairsville's 18 hole golf course is just simply a beautiful course.

You or your friends can fly into Blairsville. The airport has over 3,500' of paved and lighted runway and is being expanded.

Nearby is whitewater rafting, small theaters, gold panning, gem hunting, festivals and fairs, horseback riding trails and camping.

The weather is usually delightful - cool nights and mild winters - an average temperature is 69.3 degrees and just enough snow to really enjoy.

Blairsville has friendly folks, a caring community, a healthy climate and low crime. It's a good place to be. For more information on the area please visit the Blairsville/Union County Chamber's website.
